Daily TEA: UAE-Nvidia AI Deal Hits Snag, TSMC Ups Outlook
AI Chips, Unicorn Growth, Coinbase Surge, Huawei Ban, TSMC Forecast
Hello, dear TEA-mates, here’s what you need to know today.
1. 🛑 UAE’s Nvidia AI Chip Deal Reportedly on Hold
The landmark AI deal between the US and UAE, allowing the UAE to purchase billions in advanced AI chips from Nvidia and others, is on hold due to US national security concerns over potential smuggling to China. Championed by President Trump during a May Middle East trip, the agreement included assurances from UAE and Saudi officials on safeguards, but heightened smuggling worries have delayed finalization. The Trump administration is rumored to impose export restrictions on Malaysia and Thailand, with Malaysia recently requiring trade permits for US AI chips to prevent diversion to China. ☕ TEA For Thought: This is just absurd and sounds more like a show. I’m not sure if it’s going to be useful at all. Nvidia just partnered with G42 to develop AI solutions. G42’s CEO is allegedly linked to a high-ranking CCP official, and its major investors are CCP-backed. The CCP has infiltrated the world so deeply it’s almost unavoidable. Yet, Chinese people are distinct from the CCP, and as long as there are Chinese people fighting for freedom, there’s still hope. There always will be hope.
2. 🚀 Lovable Hits Unicorn Status with $200M Series A
Lovable, an AI startup, achieved unicorn status just eight months after launch, securing $200 million in a Series A round led by prominent investors. With a lean team of 45 employees, the company’s AI-driven platform has driven rapid growth, signaling a new era of scalable AI ventures. Read More: TechCrunch
☕ TEA For Thought: This is likely to become the norm in the AI era. Once you find product-market fit, you scale like a rocket. But the product itself is the key.
3. 📱 Coinbase’s Base App Climbs Charts, Rebrands as All-in-One Platform
Coinbase’s rebranded Wallet, now called Base, has surged 63 spots in app store charts, signaling strong retail interest in its new role as a comprehensive social and trading platform. The Base app integrates trading, social interactions, and decentralized finance, aiming to rival multi-functional apps like WeChat. This move reflects the growing trend of “everything apps” in the crypto space. Read More: The Block (Base App), The Block (App Store Surge)
☕ TEA For Thought: It’s amusing how “everything apps” are now reverting. Unlike WeChat, where the chat function came first followed by WeChat Pay and other features, the Base app is building the functions first and then adding chat capabilities. Perhaps later, a Base-chat will emerge, incorporated like the Chinese app WeChat. Base-chat could become the ultimate app where people chat, shop, game, conduct business, and more.
4. 📡 US FCC Set to Ban Chinese Tech in Submarine Cables
The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is preparing to vote on a rule banning companies using Chinese technology and equipment, including from Huawei and its former subsidiary HMN Tech, from building or operating submarine cables connecting to the US to mitigate espionage risks from Beijing. FCC Chair Brendan Carr highlighted the vulnerability of these cables, which carry 99% of global internet traffic, amid threats like the Salt Typhoon cyber attack. The ban, applying to future licenses, aligns with Trump’s “America First Investment Policy” to protect critical infrastructure for AI and data centers. Read More: Financial Times
☕ TEA For Thought: Huawei is PLA.
5. 💾 TSMC Raises 2025 Revenue Outlook Amid AI Boom
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) has upgraded its 2025 revenue growth forecast to about 30% in US dollars, up from mid-20s, driven by surging demand for high-end AI chips from clients like Nvidia and AMD. CEO C.C. Wei affirmed strong AI orders despite uncertainties from potential Trump administration tariffs, boosting investor confidence and lifting TSMC's ADRs by up to 4.3% and supplier ASML's shares by up to 3.5%. ☕ TEA For Thought: It’s intriguing to see ASML lower expectations while TSMC raises its outlook, despite both being backbones of the AI business.
