Daily TEA — Open Models, Apple Security, and Tech’s Next Wave
China AI Shift, CCP Surveillance, OpenWav, Apple, Harvard-Trump
Hello, dear TEA-mates! Here’s what you need to know today:
1.🌏 CCP-China Pushes Open-Source AI Ambitions
CCP-China is accelerating its push in open-source AI, introducing the “AI+” initiative and setting aggressive targets for both base and industry models by 2025. Government-backed measures aim to drive rapid advancement and adoption, placing Chinese models at the forefront of global AI. Notably, a majority of U.S. startups are building on Chinese open AI models—favored for their cost advantage—even as American investment lags. This growing dependence on Chinese open-source models is poised to reshape international tech competition. Read More
🫖 TEA For Thought: Not a fun fact from a US investor (Martin Casado at a16z, a big venture capital firm) that "80% chance" his portfolio startups are using Chinese open models instead of American ones like OpenAI's, just because they're cheaper. When the product is free, near-free or cheap enough, that means you are the product.
2. CCP Surveillance Tech Ties in Silicon Valley Spotlight
A new investigation reveals how U.S. tech firms, including those based in Silicon Valley, provide surveillance technologies employed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in Xinjiang—enabling mass monitoring and detentions of Uyghurs. Publicly, these companies deny complicity, but evidence shows Western-made parts and software play a role in CCP surveillance, fueling ethical debates and increasing calls for industry accountability. 🫖 TEA For Thought: This is only the tip of an iceberg. Imagine what's not covered. There’s a saying in the Bible: we all should remind ourselves every day, there’s only one master—God or Money; you can’t serve both. Your principle and virtue, or money and power. One thing that can’t be emphasized more is that the CCP is a dictatorship regime and cannot represent the Chinese people—CCP is not equal to Chinese.
3.🎵 OpenWav Reinvents Music for Artists and Fans
OpenWav is a new app championed by Wyclef Jean and co-founder Jaeson Ma, designed to give artists full control and better profits through a direct-to-fan model. The platform lets musicians drop tracks, engage directly with fans, sell tickets and merchandise, and host exclusive events—while keeping up to 80% of ticket revenues. Unlike streaming platforms that pay tiny fractions per play, OpenWav focuses on helping independent artists build communities of "true fans," who pay directly for music and experiences. AI tools built into the app assist with merch design, content creation, and management suggestions. The business model bypasses traditional middlemen and algorithms, empowering artists to own their audiences and data. Read More
🫖 TEA For Thought: To eliminate the middleman and build a platform where creators can directly interact with fans is definitely the future. With AI, the profit margin can increase significantly when the cost to do business is lower. If blockchain can be added into the ecosystem, that would be even greater—immutable, transparent, cheaper, faster, and safer as well. We will be watching to see how OpenWav opens the waves.
4.🔒 Apple Rolls Out Enhanced Memory Integrity Enforcement (EIM)
Apple has launched Memory Integrity Enforcement (MIE), a new security feature for the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air, designed to combat spyware and zero-day exploits. MIE leverages advanced memory tagging technology, making it dramatically harder for attackers to exploit memory vulnerabilities—a common entry point for sophisticated hacks and spyware. By assigning unique tags to memory segments and blocking unauthorized access, EIM can detect attacks in real time, crash malicious apps, and log forensic artifacts for investigators. Security experts say these new iPhones may now be the most secure mainstream computing devices, raising the cost and complexity for anyone trying to break in. Read More
🫖 TEA For Thought: A great product will sell itself. After reading this article about hack-proof enhancements, I bet many will go upgrade their phone—or at least feel tempted to do so. I know I do, lol.
5.🛠️ Trump Floats $500M Vocational School Deal with Harvard
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on CNBC that former President Donald Trump wants Harvard to invest $500 million to build vocational schools as part of a potential legal settlement. The proposal comes amid negotiations related to government concerns over campus issues, and could see Harvard use the funds for job-training programs, echoing similar workforce development deals made by other universities. Read More
🫖 TEA For Thought: If blue collar is the new white collar—which is definitely happening in the age of AI—then this is the go-to school. After all, everyone always needs an electrician or a welder, and those jobs can’t be done by robots any time soon.
