1. 📱 North Korea's Smartphone Is a Surveillance Device
The Wall Street Journal tested a smartphone smuggled out of North Korea with a former North Korean soldier. The Android-based device is confined to the state-approved Kwangmyong intranet and carries controls that monitor what users type and view. Analyses of similar phones have found automatic screenshots taken every five minutes and stored in hidden folders, plus text substitutions that replace banned terms with regime-approved language. 2. 🦁 Brave Can Hide Your Real Email Address
Brave added email aliases that let users register for websites without sharing their primary email address. After a user creates a Brave account, the browser can fill an alias into an email field and forward incoming messages to the real inbox. Brave says it filters forwarded mail for spam and viruses, deletes messages from its servers after forwarding, encrypts account data at rest, and keeps alias notes on the device unless encrypted sync is enabled. 3. 🎨 Taste Is the Decision AI Cannot Make for You
Product leader Ravi Mehta argues that taste is curation, not craft. Craft determines whether you can make something, while taste determines what should be made and for whom. AI lowers the craft barrier, but it can also replace the creator's choices with familiar defaults, producing what Mehta calls slop. His preferred workflow is to frame, explore, critique, explore again, select, and refine. 4. 🫀 What If an AI Could Feel Its Own Condition?
A Nature Machine Intelligence Perspective proposes “interoceptive AI,” inspired by how living organisms monitor internal states such as temperature, glucose, and blood pressure. The authors argue that artificial agents could become more autonomous and adaptive by separating internal and external state variables, keeping internal dynamics stable through feedback, and tying primary rewards to those internal conditions. Their framework extends the Markov decision process used in reinforcement learning and could help robots manage energy, overheating, mechanical wear, or changing mission demands with less human intervention. 5. 🧭 Chatbots Do Not Share One Set of Values
The Economist tested 25 frontier AI models with questions drawn from the World Values Survey and a U.S. voter survey, finding that many models produced answers that were more secular and socially liberal than much of the world's population. Chinese models differed because they are required to uphold official state narratives. The divergence appears in ordinary advice: ChatGPT recommended distance from interfering in-laws, DeepSeek favored compromise, and Mistral suggested journaling. The Taste Calibration Loop: turns your likes and dislikes into concrete rules that keep AI from choosing the creative direction for you.
You are my taste calibration partner. I want to improve [PASTE THE THING: writing, design, product, code, or plan]. I will give you three examples I like and three I dislike, plus who the work is for.
Do not generate the final result yet. First:
1. Identify the recurring choices in the examples, such as structure, tone, density, pacing, visual hierarchy, or level of risk.
2. Separate my personal preferences from what the intended audience is likely to value.
3. Write five concrete decision rules in this format: Prefer [X] because [reason]. Avoid [Y] because [reason].
4. Show one conflict between my taste and the audience's likely taste.
5. Propose three clearly different directions that follow the rules.
Ask me to choose or combine a direction. Then produce one draft, critique it against the five rules, and revise only the parts that miss.
